The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Rajhrad is a remarkable baroque masterpiece located at the heart of Rajhrad, near Masarykova Street. Constructed on the site of an older parish church, it was completed between 1765 and 1766 under Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel, a prominent Czech-Italian architect. This church is not only a significant cultural monument in the Czech Republic but also serves as an active parish for the local community.

The origins date back to 1330 when Olomoucký bishop Jindřich Berka z Dubé a Lipé authorized a chapel dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Frequent flooding from the Svratka River necessitated this construction, impeding access to religious services in the nearby Benedictine monastery church. The chapel underwent several transformations, notably between 1682 and 1683 when Probošt Celestin Arlet expanded it. Its final baroque form was achieved through a redesign by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel during Otmar Konrád's tenure as probošt, culminating in its completion in 1766.

Architecturally, the church is distinguished by its Greek cross plan with an elongated eastern arm. It features a unique blend of elements such as lunette windows and a large barrel vault. The façade mirrors designs found in other Santini works, although his authorship for some projects remains unconfirmed. The structure includes three pairs of windows and two circular clerestory windows in the chancel area, enhancing its illumination.

Throughout its history, various administrators have influenced its development. Antonín Pirmus initially commissioned the project around 1720, but it was Otmar Konrád who oversaw its completion. In 1767, Olomoucký bishop Maxmilián z Hamiltonu elevated the church to parish status, a role it continues today.

Key events include its elevation to parish status and the establishment of a new cemetery next to it in 1682. These developments underscore its importance as both a religious and community landmark. The church also houses an empty crypt, with remains transferred to the adjacent cemetery where notable figures such as opati and scholars like dr. Beda Dudík are interred.

Today, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands as a testament to baroque architectural brilliance and historical resilience. It is accessible to visitors who wish to explore its rich history and intricate design. Ongoing preservation efforts ensure it remains a cherished site for both locals and tourists. Its cultural significance and architectural beauty make it a must-visit destination in Rajhrad, offering insights into the region's religious and artistic heritage.

The story of this church begins in 1330 when Olomoucký bishop Jindřich Berka z Dubé a Lipé authorized the establishment of a chapel dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This was no ordinary decision; it was made to address accessibility issues caused by frequent flooding from the Svratka River, ensuring that the community could continue their religious practices without hindrance.

Fast forward to 1765, when this site underwent a remarkable transformation under the guidance of Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The church you see today is likely his design—a stunning example of baroque architecture completed between 1765 and 1766.
