The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Liběšice stands as a testament to architectural evolution and historical resilience, common traits among European religious structures. Situated in the village of Liběšice within Ústecký kraj, this Roman Catholic parish church is notable for its Empire style, resulting from significant reconstruction completed in 1813. Originally built in the Gothic style during the 14th century, it has undergone numerous transformations reflecting broader historical and cultural shifts.

The church's origins date back to 1352 when it was first established as a Gothic structure. At that time, Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire, having recently emerged from the Hussite Wars, which significantly influenced religious practices. Over time, the church served various denominations; during the Hussite movement, it hosted services under both kinds, later becoming Lutheran in the Reformation era before reverting to Catholicism in 1622. A Renaissance tower was added between 1589 and 1591.

The church's history is marked by resilience, especially after its destruction by fire in 1638. This event necessitated extensive reconstruction efforts that culminated in the early 19th century with its transformation into the current Empire style. Architects Josef Gaube and David Dialler from Litoměřice led the rebuilding, preserving only the Renaissance tower while redesigning the rest of the structure.

Architecturally, it is a single-nave building featuring an offset polygonal presbytery and a baroque dome atop its hipped-roof western tower. The entrance portal on the tower is half-cylindrical with Renaissance elements, including a bossed frame and two heraldic symbols above it. The windows are pointed, and both the nave and presbytery have flat ceilings. Emporiums flank the sides of the church, supported by segmental arches and plank vaulting.

Inside, the church houses artistic treasures reflecting its rich history. The main altar on the east wall features a painted altarpiece from the time of construction, attributed to F. Kučera from Litoměřice. Above this is a baroque painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary by Jan Jiří Heinsche, dating post-1680. Flanking the triumphal arch are two side altars; one bears an 1844 signed image of St. Barbara by Johann Birnbaum, while the other displays a gilded baroque sculpture of Piety from the 17th century. Additional artworks include baroque paintings and sculptures of saints such as Saints Vavřinec and Florián, also by Jan Jiří Heinsche, and others like St. Joseph and St. Aloisius.

The church's exterior is adorned with rare sculptures on its enclosing wall, the focus of preservation efforts since the early 21st century. These sculptures add to the site's cultural significance, emphasizing the community’s dedication to maintaining its historical heritage.

In recent years, following the passing of long-serving spiritual administrator Prof. M. Zedníček in 2012, the church underwent interior renovations and reorganization. This included a new painting scheme and adjustments to the placement of various elements within the church, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functional use for worship.

Today, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is not only a place of worship but also a cultural landmark attracting visitors interested in history and architecture. Its designation as a protected cultural monument underscores its importance. The addition of an iron bell named Mária in 2015 further enriches the church's historical narrative, linking it to broader regional traditions.
