Zámek Vršovice is a historical monument located in the southern part of the village of Vršovice, near a bend in the Ohře River. This castle stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural history of the Czech Republic and is recognized as a protected cultural monument. Despite its current state of abandonment and inaccessibility, it holds significant historical value due to its rich past and unique architectural features.

The origins of Zámek Vršovice trace back to a medieval fortress that served as the seat for the lords of the Vršovice estate. Historical records first mention this site in 1419, although it is believed that a noble residence existed there much earlier, possibly during the time of the Rydkéřové z Polenska family who acquired the estate in 1396 and held it until 1474. By the 16th century, the medieval fortress was likely transformed into a smaller country manor, setting the stage for its later development.

The current structure emerged in the first half of the 17th century, with significant modifications made over time. It features a four-wing layout surrounding a central courtyard, smooth facades, and right-angled windows. Notable architectural elements include an oriel clock on the main tower, dating back to at least 1663, and a chapel of St. Cross that protrudes from the eastern facade. These reflect its late Renaissance style, completed around 1628 under Volf Ilburk z Vřesovic's ownership.

Ownership has changed hands several times throughout history. After being acquired by Prokop Dvořecký z Olbramovic in 1615 and subsequently confiscated following his execution for involvement in the Bohemian Revolt, it was purchased by Volf Ilburk z Vřesovic in 1622. The castle remained under various owners until 1783 when Sylvie Kateřina Černínová provdaná z Bádenu acquired it. Later that year, Alžběta Augusta z Bádenu sold the estate to Jan kníže ze Schwarzenberka, marking the beginning of the Schwarzenberg family's long tenure until 1924. Post-1945, the castle became state property and was used for housing before falling into private hands after 1989.

Throughout its history, Zámek Vršovice has witnessed several key events. During the Seven Years' War and the War of Bavarian Succession, Prussian troops occupied the castle, causing damage to its interior. In a more recent event, the castle's tower collapsed in May 2024, further contributing to its current state of disrepair.

Today, Zámek Vršovice stands as an abandoned monument, inaccessible to visitors but still holding historical intrigue. Its architectural elements and storied past make it a site worth exploring for those interested in Czech history and architecture.
